Senegal: Food and communication costs rise strongly in July

by admin

Data released by Senegal’s National Statistics office showed a moderate rise in consumer price inflation to 0.9% month on month; 0.2% year on year. However, the food and alcoholic beverage subindex rose sharply by 2.1% month on month, second only to the communication subindex which rose by a massive 3.1% month on month (3.9% year on year) and may be reflective of the growing number of communication products and services in the country. We note with interest data from the Pew Research Centre which suggests that younger, educated and English-speaking Africans are more likely to own smartphones.
