Is Dakar the next port and logistics El Dorado?

by admin

A leading enabler of global trade

Dubai Ports (DP) World, which operates marine and inland terminals across six continents, is looking to turn the West African city of Dakar in Senegal into a key logistics hub. The chairman and CEO of DP World has reiterated the company’s readiness to be part of the massive change and growth the African continent is witnessing, using its enormous expertise and know-how for the benefit of countries in the region eyeing improvements to their trade and infrastructure capacity. DP World boasts a daily operation of 1,600 cranes, 55km of quayside globally and serves 70,00 vessels annually.

Senegal is keen to plug into this opportunity and has partnered with DP World to develop Port du Futur, a logistics free zone nestling within the new Blaise Diagne airport.  This complements DP World’s leading investment in Dakar, DP World-Dakar Terminal, which stands as West Africa’s largest and most modern container terminal with a capacity of over 600,000 TEU. With this development, Senegal is positioning itself as ‘the’ gateway for the burgeoning West African trade and business sectors.

African ambitions

DP World has operations in Senegal, Egypt, Mozambique, Djibouti, and Algeria and recently signed an agreement with the Republic of Somaliland to invest in a multi-purpose port project at Berbera.  It also secured a 25-year concession to develop and operate a new logistics centre in Kigali, Rwanda at the beginning of 2016.
